What if you have a condition that needs a life-long maintenance medicine and your doctor does not have a choice but to prescribe you a pricey tablet, pill, or injectable biotech drug? Then you should be ready to find your wallet empty or your card maxed out. When going to a pharmacy and buying prescription medicines is like getting yourself robbed in a blink of an eye, then it is high time that you find prescription discounts.
Most of the time, pharmaceutical companies give discount cards for expensive medications. Aside from the cards, there are also discount programs that are being offered in each state. The objective of these programs is to help people pay for the prescription drugs that they need.
Some local pharmacies and even department stores also give price slash coupons. This is both to gain and keep more customers. Stores print them out and give it away. While this is a great idea, people should know and understand the condition of the coupons that they get. At times a voucher may only be used in the store’s branch where you got it from. Also, acquainting yourself with the eligibility requirements of the cards can also help a lot. You should know if you are qualified to use it in buying medicines.
Helping you in determining the 10 most prescribed medication in the United States
In this section, we’ll show you the top 10 most prescribed medications in the US (from goodrx.com). Keep reading, as you might find your current medication in this list!
At number 10, we have Hydrocodone/Acetaminophen. This medication is used to treat moderate to severe pain from a variety of causes.
Coming in at number 9 is Losartan. This is another familiar medication since this is mainly used to treat high blood pressure. It also reduces the risk of stroke, and also to reduce the progression of kidney disease in patients with diabetes.
Next we have at number 8 is Metformin (Glucophage). This medication is used in combination with diet and exercise to help control blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes. This medication is often used as a first-line drug, meaning it is often tried before other options of treatment. It can also be used alone or with other medications. Metformin is said to be the most widely prescribed diabetes medication in the world and it is available as a very cheap generic medication in the US.
All the way at number 7, we have Omeprazole (Prilosec). This medication is a proton pump inhibitor which is used to treat certain conditions where there is an excessive amount of acid in the stomach, like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and ulcers. It’s the most commonly used – and least expensive compared to other medications like Prevacid.
Moving on at number 6, we have Gabapentin (Neurontin). This medication is being used to treat seizures in adults with epilepsy and nerve pain. Even though this medication is not an opioid, it has been recently reported with misuse and can be a cause of overdose deaths.
We’re halfway through this list, and not at number 5, we have Amlodipine (Norvasc, Amvaz). This medication is classified as calcium channel blocker which can be used to treat high blood pressure and chest pain. This medication is tagged by WHO as an essential medicine for basic healthcare and one of the most common heart medications.
The fourth spot was taken by Levothyroxine (Synthroid, Unithroid, Levoxyl, Levo-T, Euthyrox). This medication is used to improve symptoms of thyroid deficiency and this is a synthetically prepared thyroid hormone. You might see several brands and generic levothyroxine available in the market, but they are not interchangeable.
At number 3 we have Albuterol (Accuneb, Ventolin, Proair, Proventil). This medication is used to prevent and treat bronchospasm. It helps by relaxing muscles in the lungs and is a short-acting beta agonist.
The second most prescribed medication in the US is Lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril). Another high blood pressure medication that’s used in combination with other medications to treat heart failure. This medication is being used widely due to its longer-acting effects which means you only need to take one tablet per day rather than the usual two or three.
The top 1 most prescribed medication in the US is none other than Atorvastatin (Lipitor). Before it was released as a generic medication in 2011, it is already considered as the top drug by sales in the previous decades. This medication is used to treat high cholesterol. Though not as inexpensive as simvastatin, its generic price still continued to drop.
